A Warning about the Experts
Has it ever occurred to you that the experts ie., scientists and researchers and all those types are just as human as you and I. Our society has raised science on a pedestal and some worship it like a god. But I think we all need to be a little more skeptical of these titans of modern society. Remember they need to make money too. Big research projects can't be funded without ... well, funds!
I was spurned to write this piece because of the research that was just completed on Sugar and artificial sweeteners. Specifically zero-calorie saccharine sugar replacements. An article from Canada.com explained that Purdue University Psychlogists reported that "'The data clearly indicate that consuming a food sweetened with no-calorie saccharin can lead to greater body-weight gain and adiposity (fat tissue) than would consuming the same food sweetened with a high-calorie sugar.'" AAAHHHH! How could this be our faith is crushed! We have been poisoning ourselves while trying to cleanse ourselves. It's almost like one of those stories about the cults that make you drink the poison to reach the mothership. HA HAhahhha HA!?
Anyway this is a really interesting conclusion. Poor fat Rats! Anyway here is the link.

This goes to show that Diet pop tastes horrid for a reason. It is POISON. HAhahAhaahha HA! Well, I believe it (despite the argument I just made about experts) and I think that diet soda does make us FAT. Why do we not have more options. When we go to the restaurants or stores the soda pop is all or at least an overwhelming portion of what is available to drink. We need to invent more healthy drinks. I judge that soda pop companies are not much different then cigarette companies. Sip on that!
PS: Next time there is any talk about raising taxes on cigarettes, lets do it by placing a barcode on butts and charging an extra $.05 per ciggy. That way people will take care of them, or bums will have some more cash:)

I just researched this a little and found that researchers believe that not just Saccharine Sweeteners are to blame but all sugar substitutes including Splenda!
I am either drinking coffee or soda of any one form about 86% of my waking hours. So I feel that I am an expert about good beverage and bad beverage. I do support the hypothesis that artificial sweeteners can be just as bad for you as normal sugar but so does the current medical research which makes soda manufacturers put warnings on their cans (similar to cigarettes). But on the other hand, since I consider myself an expert on beverages, I measure the "healthiness" of a soda by what I call the "If I was in the jungle" rule. The rule is very simple. If I was in the jungle and I drank the beverage would it hinder or amplify my ability to run from a bear? Could I scale a coconut tree to plunder the vital nutrients of its armored nuts? And could I in fact impress the only stranded female enough to entice her to select me to populate our jungle home? If the answer is yes then I made a healthy choice. If not then I write the name of the beverage down (not on paper, its a mental note) and I don't consume it for several weeks at which point I'll give it another try and probably come to the same conclusion (I'm looking at you Sierra Mist Zero). These questions haunt me hourly and its how I keep the eye of the tiger.
That's awesome, Scott!
I just finished reading the book: "Don't Eat This Book." Written by the guy who made "Supersize Me" the movie. It discusses, among a million factoids, how artificial sweeteners are between 400 and 600 % sweeter than regular sugar. (and honey is definitely the healthiest.)
What I really wanted to say is...
Barcodes on cigarette butts! It's genius. Charge a deposit like we do with cans and bottles, and it becomes incentive to reduce litter. It's so funny that it actually borders on "possible."
You've taken your salon to the internet.
Sweets, however I may personally abuse them, are not and should not be part of a regular diet. They are desserts. If one is to live on candy, they will become torpid and fat. If one feels they can cheat this by using artificial sweetening products, I think it is their own gamble. But if their purpose by using these sweeteners is to be healthier, the path is clear; eating less sweets is healthier.
The comparison of this to addiction is easy to see. I feel that if tobacco has a tax, and other products are of similar traits, then they should be dealt with similarly. In the US, tobacco use is regulated, but sweetener consumption is not. However, abusing either of them can lead to serious problems of cancer or diabetes, respectively, to name but two.
The taxes are used for socialist purposes. This gives me a thought: Why not have a tax on every product that is based on how the products contribute to the greater good? Forget practicality for this thought problem. Take it even to a case by case basis. Products could be taxed differently based on the need of the individual. No need for the barcode on the cigarette, just put the barcode on the person. It would be a hell of a way to regulate greed in society. It also sounds really creepy.
